A new program at Cal State LA aims to get more female students thinking about STEM industries. This program, called LAunchPad, had been started six years back. Presently, there are just 15% women signed up for the college’s College of Engineering. The STEM N’ Sustainability program at Cal State Los Angeles is an attempt to encourage female pupils to pursue professions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) associated fields. The program offers representatives from Cal State LA, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and CSUN and LAUSD to introduce female students to STEM careers. Pupils whom be involved in this program will read about STEM jobs, and will behave as mentors to younger students. The pupils will also work towards establishing an education path to professions in the utility industry.
The program also targets reinforcing students’ identification as scientists and producing a supportive environment due to their studies.
